Founder & Lead Therapist
Dr. David Hall is a family therapist and mental health counselor who is the founder of Haven Family Psychiatry, as well as the owner and director of the counseling/psychotherapy practice in our clinic, Haven Counseling Center at Haven Family Psychiatry. Dr. Hall’s clinical experience is in working with professionals, teenagers, college students, families, and couples with issues such as personal identity, career counseling, sexual health, family communication, and anxiety. His expertise is in the therapeutic use of story, imagery, and metaphor as ways to help people see their lives and new solutions. Dr. Hall also provides clinical supervision for post-graduates seeking LPC-MHSP and/or LMFT licensure in Tennessee.
Professionally, Dr. Hall holds dual licenses in Tennessee as a Licensed Marital and Family Therapist (LMFT) and as a Licensed Professional Counselor-Mental Health Service Provider-Approved Supervisor (LPC-MHSP-AS). He is also a certified sex therapist (CST) under the American Board of Christian Sex Therapists, a nationally certified counselor (NCC) under the National Board for Certified Counselors, and holds a certificate in substance abuse counseling from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Along with his clinical work, Dr. Hall is the Co-Founder and Chief Maven of PsychMaven, a group that provides courses, consulting, and other resources for therapists seeking career/business development as well as continuing education training. Since 2011, Dr. Hall has been the Director of the Narrative Institute, a founding component institute of PsychMaven that provides education and training in the study and application of narrative theory and the craft of story in multiple settings. He also has the privilege of serving as an adjunct professor with Richmont Graduate University and as a former President of the Tennessee Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (TNAMFT), the Tennessee state division of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT).
Originally from Knoxville, David graduated high school from the Christian Academy of Knoxville (CAK). David received his B.A. in History from Middle Tennessee State University, his M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Richmont Graduate University, and his Doctorate in Psychology (PsyD) from California Southern University. After beginning his professional life in Atlanta, David and his wife, Brandy, relocated to Knoxville and both joined the therapy staff of Ebenezer Counseling Services in 2008. At the end of 2015, David launched Haven Family Psychiatry in the hopes of offering more services to the Knoxville community. On a personal note, David enjoys the mountains, old movies, good reads, conversations about anything and sometimes just being lazy with his wife, family, and friends. David is also a novelist and songwriter who loves to see how art and story show the hand and mind of the Creator and interwoven narratives of peoples' lives.
